I grew up in Westchester County, New York, and I love to read in my free time. I’m currently a senior at Greenburgh Eleven High School and a resident at The Children’s Village. People recommended that I join the Student Council at GB11, and I thought it would be a great way to learn and turn every opportunity into something positive. I was excited to join, but I thought I might lose the race—but I won! Now, I’m the President, and I work alongside my Chief Executive AKA GB11’s Director of Student Support Services, Mr. Pliego, who oversees the Student Council’s operations. I’m proud to lead initiatives that can make a difference for students.
One project I’m especially proud of is the “Just Sayin’” podcast. We wanted to create something that students would want to watch, where they could share their ideas and showcase productive and creative work. I believe that if other people don’t have a voice, I can use mine for them. If you have charisma or leadership traits, you should use them to inspire others to find their own voice.
Another project that is close to my heart is our ecospheric extension campaign. I actually started it at home, advocating for better recycling in my neighborhood and apartment complex. I noticed all the bottles and recyclables were being dumped into the same garbage bin, so I encouraged proper separation. At school, we turned it into a game: classrooms compete to collect bottles, and the funds from recycling go toward school projects or resources that students want. It’s exciting to see the lessons learned and the impact we can make when everyone works together.
Being part of student government has also given me insight into how challenging real government leadership can be. I’ve learned that change is hard, even for small wins, and teamwork is essential to achieve goals. Working with adults in leadership, not just peers, has helped me grow and stay humble while building confidence as a leader.
Looking ahead, I hope to continue making an impact and eventually attend Harvard University to continue my education in person. The skills I’ve gained from leading, problem-solving, and advocating for others will stay with me wherever I go.
