CV Teens are Diving into Lifeguard Training and Staying Cool All Year
What’s a great job for teens where they can stay cool, enjoy the sun, and find “something positive to do with your time”? According to CV youth Jayden, it’s being a lifeguard. However, a lifeguard shortage that has been plaguing communities across the U.S. since the start of the pandemic has yet to relent, as reported by USA Today. That’s why we’re proud to highlight that CV is actively training lifeguards all year round! Our program is designed to prepare students on CV’s campus and in conjunction with GB11, our onsite school, for the Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. Through comprehensive training at our Dobbs Ferry Lanza Recreational Center’s indoor pool, we teach essential swimming skills —all completely free!
Let’s hear from some of our lifeguards:
What skills have you learned from being a lifeguard that will benefit you in the future?
“I would say patience, focus, and always being aware of your surroundings. It’s important to be mindful of yourself and others.” – Mansura
What advice would you give other teens considering becoming a lifeguard?
“It’s a good pastime for the summer and something positive to do with your time. It’s fun as long as you’re willing to put in the work. But if you have a short attention span, this job isn’t for you. You really must be on the job—there’s no slacking off.” – Jayden
“Don’t give up. If you’re trying to learn how to swim, it will be hard in the beginning. There was a time when I would get in the water and just be flapping… I was one of the last in the class to learn how to tread water… then one day I finally got it.” – Mansura
Once students receive their lifeguard certification, they have the opportunity to participate in and assist with a Learn-to-Swim program for younger students, enhancing their leadership skills and giving back to the community. This year, 8 young people have become certified lifeguards, and 4 were certified last year.
We’re incredibly proud of our young lifeguards for their dedication and hard work, and we’re excited to see how they’ll continue to make waves in their communities.
