An Opportunity of New Experiences, Coupled with Celebrating College Graduation
Chowannie experienced a life of challenges and multiple struggles. At 16, she found herself navigating the complexities of foster care after experiencing trauma that shrouded her aspirations. The world she knew had been upended, but being a part of The Children’s Village (CV), she discovered new opportunities and hope.
Chowannie’s team includes a coach who has earned a reputation of seeing the potential in others. In June 2024 Chowannie’s life took an expected turn, she found herself competing in a pageant and enjoying new experiences. Her entry into Miss New York USA came through a lot of encouragement and care.
“After I told my coach that I was accepted into the pageant, he really supported me,” she says. “He sent emails to everybody and made sure I got the resources I needed. I also made new friends, it was definitely an empowering and amazing experience.”
When the announcement for Best Evening Gown came, Chowannie’s heart skipped a beat. The moment felt surreal as her name was called. The recognition was more than just an accolade; it was a symbol of her journey from hardship to triumph.
Participating in the pageant was a new discovery and was just the beginning of Chowannie’s journey. Today, she is entering her final semester at Hunter College, studying psychology. For the last four years, she has worked in CV’s IT department, a role that has allowed her to feel even more secure and confident.
Chowannie’s future is brimming with possibilities. She is eager to tackle new challenges and continue making a positive impact. Her story is a reminder that even when life takes unexpected turns, with support, determination, and a little bit of courage, we can transform our dreams into reality.
