Celebrating Women Driving Change at The Children’s Village
March 2025
As we commemorate Women’s History Month, we proudly recognize the exceptional women leaders at The Children’s Village (CV). This month, we’re spotlighting the accomplishments, motivations, and values of two leaders: Meagan Stone, our Director of Human Resources, and Jennifer Madera, the Division Director of Safe Harbor Services.
Meagan Stone, Director of Human Resources
Meagan’s journey at The Children’s Village began as a Human Resources Assistant in May 2011, rising from an intern to a powerful leader.
For over 14 years, Meagan has spearheaded a massive expansion of our staff, strategically onboarding more than 6,380 members. Today, she manages a team of 17 human resources professionals who help hire and train new employees. She emphasizes to her team that the recruitment of each new staff member represents an opportunity to strengthen the organization’s capacity to make a meaningful difference in young lives.
“In the world of HR, things change almost every day with new laws and regulations, so I try to find silver linings and opportunities to laugh,” said Meagan.
Meagan also seeks opportunities to support colleagues who are working hard in these fast-paced roles.
“I take the time to say ‘Hey, how was your weekend? Is there anything I can help with?’” she described. “I’m big on ‘I’m not better than anyone because of a title.’ If I need to organize files all day to help somebody out, I will. There’s nothing too small for me to pick up. We’re big on team building in the HR department.”
Meagan’s advice for young professionals beginning their human resources careers? “Initiative is my keyword when I interview potential staff for this department. You have to be willing to work with a team, learn more, and stay ahead of the curve of human resources.”
Her journey demonstrates the profound difference a committed professional can make, both within CV and for the youth and families we serve.

Jennifer Madera, Division Director of Safe Harbor Services
Jennifer’s proudest career accomplishment is her role in transforming Safe Harbor services – what began as a therapeutic group in lower Westchester has grown into a comprehensive network that includes two small group homes and a community group. Her leadership has played a pivotal role in expanding the program’s services, fostering a division that supports and empowers numerous young people.
Safe Harbor’s growth encapsulates Jennifer’s commitment to ending sexual violence against youth and advancing equity for young women. Across Safe Harbor programs, staff use a strength-based perspective to connect with youth. “Though they experienced challenges, they are resilient people with their own ideas, goals, and desires. I also try to be very honest and straightforward,” she said of her clients.
“A young lady who experienced sex trafficking came to our shelter about five years ago and struggled psychologically and emotionally,” Jennifer recalled. “We worked with her to develop skills to maintain relationships and eventually placed her with a foster family. She is graduating with her Bachelor’s degree in social work this May.”
Jennifer stayed connected with her. “I’m actually going to her college graduation. She interns at The Sanctuary. She also co-facilitates our therapeutic group and mentors’ youth,” Jennifer said. Jennifer urges community members to know the signs that youth may be experiencing trafficking. They include suddenly owning expensive items, becoming more withdrawn or aggressive, displaying heightened hypervigilance, going missing for unexplained periods, or engaging in high-risk sexual behaviors. If you know a teenager in the Westchester or Rockland counties who may be a victim, you can call 1-888-997-1583 or 1-877-540-7680.
