Volunteer Screening Process

For volunteers who come on a consistent basis (individually or in groups), adult, and college-age tutors:

Volunteer & Mentor Application – You will be asked to complete an application and provide at least 2 references as well as days and times of availability.

Interview – You will be invited to participate in an interview process that includes an interview with the Director of Volunteer Services. The purpose of this interview is to give you a basic orientation, get to know you better, and to assess whether this program is right for you and to ensure an appropriate assignment.

Screening – You will be asked to consent to criminal background, child abuse, and DMV checks, and TB and drug testing. In most cases, once the drug test has been completed, you may commence your volunteer assignment.

MENTOR SCREENING PROCESS:
Mentor Intake:

Volunteer & Mentor Application – You will be asked to complete an application and provide at least 3 references.

Interview – You will be invited to participate in an interview process that includes an interview with our Director of Volunteer Services. The purpose of this interview is to give you a basic orientation, get to know you better and to assess whether this program is right for you and to ensure an appropriate match.

Screening – You will be asked to consent to criminal background, child abuse, and DMV checks, and TB and drug testing.

Training – You are required to participate in a 7 hour mentor training. This training is designed to offer helpful information, give you confidence, and provide the know-how to navigate any challenges that may come up. You may have the opportunity to meet a mentor/mentee pair who will talk about their mentoring relationship and how it evolved.

Youth Intake:

Referral – Youngsters are identified through referrals by social workers. Youth must have an interest in being paired with a mentor.

Consent – If present, a parent/guardian must give consent for a youngster to participate.

Screening Process – Volunteer Program staff contact the prospective mentee’s social worker to obtain information about the youth’s background, interests and needs. Volunteer Program staff also spends time with the youth getting to know them better. Prospective mentees are also asked to complete a questionnaire about their interests and ideal mentor.

How long does the process take?

Results of criminal background and child abuse checks are sometimes returned quickly but may take as long as 2 months. We ask for your patience throughout this process.

Until we receive all clearances from state agencies, we would be unable to match you with a mentee. However, you may be invited to attend mentor program group activities and have an opportunity to meet other mentors and mentees.
